Copyright 2017 Youth and Society Institute for Civic Leadership (ICL) Building stronger civil society for sustainable development The Institute for Civic Leadership (ICL) is a leadership development program of the Youth and Society (YAS) committed to strengthen  capacity of civil society leaders  and institutions in Malawi.  The program is aimed at building a strong Malawian civil society, empowering innovative civic leadership, and cultivating democracy for nation building and national development. We acknowledge the important and legitimate role of civil society in the fight against poverty, promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in democratic Malawi. Mzuzu Education Trust Fund (METF) Girls Education The Mzuzu Education Trust Fund (METF) is an education program of the Youth and Society (YAS) dedicated to closing the gaps in education opportunity and achievement for low-income families and communities. We stand up and act for the poorest and marginalised citizens  and communities, especially young people whose needs and potential are often overlooked. We recognise the widening gap between  the rich and the poor in our society as opportunities for education are biased towards richer families. OXFAM 2015 report indicates that  in 2011 the richest 10 percent of Malawians spent 34 times more than the poorest 10 percent. We see access to quality education by all  citizens as the greatest equaliser between the rich and the poor.  We therefore strive to provide support to low-income students; improve access to quality education; and evaluate education policy and practice and negotiate our position.
