YAS DRILLS KARONGA DUTY BEARERS IN POLITICAL ACCOUNTABILITY, CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT INSTRUMENTS Author:- Alfred Zgambo As part of continued efforts to strengthen duty bearers responsiveness, YAS on the 19th march 2021 trained Karonga duty bearers and bureaucrats in Political Accountability, Citizen Engagement, and Youth Development Instruments. The training intended to equip the targeted Participants with knowledge and skills in Political Accountability, Citizen Engagement and Youth Development Instruments under The Democracy in Young Hands Project. Speaking to the media after the training session, Dalitso Magelegele, the project officer for Democracy in young hands Project at YAS emphasized the need to engage the duty bearers in the training. "We thought it wise to train the duty bearers that the youths will be engaging with both at ward and district level, because what we want is the duty bearers to be responsive to the issues that the citizens particularly the young people who are in majority demands" He said. Speaking further, Magelegele told the media that YAS under Democracy In Youth Hands project has already been engaging the youths in Karonga under the same initiative. "We have facilitated the formation of Youth Action Groups (YAGs) in all the ten wards in Karonga, hence we saw it necessary to engage the duty bearers." He added. It is hoped that the duty bearers will use their acquired skills and knowledge to respond to the needs of citizens better, and that the youth shall actively participate in political and developmental processes in their respective communities. In his final remarks, Magelegele challenged the youths to use their demographic divided to be vigilant and actively participate in advancing the youth agenda at all levels; ward, district, regional and national.
